I think I do get your problem, but mostly I don't agree.
Diplomatic trade is indeed very powerfull in civ-evo, to the point of being unbalancing. Although it makes progress somewhat random, due to the need for friendly neighbors, it also introduces the strategical aspect of exploration since at least one friend of about equal tech is essential.

I think civ-evo is more balanced in almost all aspects. The balance is very different from civ2 however and as long as you haven't a feel for it, the game might seem unbalanced for a civ crack.
AI is also better (though far from perfect), so hard will be hard until you get a feel for the balance in civ-evo.
I wonder which aspects (except advance trading) you think are more unbalanced than in civ2. (not that there aren't any.)
: There's no time for fun because you would be overrun by AI.
If you play you should get to a difficulty level that is appropriate. Don't think civ-evo is (still) close to civ2.
